If you're in London, be sure you head over to Mayfair and pay a visit to The Fashion Illustration Gallery. Showcasing a beautifully compact selection of covers that the renowned fashion illustrator Rene Gruau created for International Textiles magazine between 1946 and 1984, this is the perfect afternoon out.
Famous for his bold colours and sweeping black lines, we've always wanted to see Gruau's work up close. We've seen his drawings on the pages of magazines such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, as well as his sketches for major designers including Christian Dior and Balenciaga, but nothing quite beats seeing the originals for your self.
What struck us when we saw this exhibition was how much texture there is in Garau's work. When you see them on the cover of a glossy magazine, you don't see the layering of the gouache paint or the inky spray of paint on the paper and this makes them all the more charming.
We could hardly bear to leave without taking one home – go and see for yourself! Open until Saturday 4th December, The Mayor Gallery, 22A, Cork Street, London.
