GRADUATION TIME

Last week, we attended the renowned Central Saint Martin's graduate BA show. Always one of the most exciting events on the graduate fashion calendar, we couldn't wait to get down to the Old York Hall in Bethnal Green to see what this year's students would send down the catwalk. To no one's surprise, when we arrived, we were met with a mass of exceptionally well-dressed individuals, lots of big designer names, and tonnes of students in their own creations.

From the minute we entered the show-space, like everyone else, we felt a huge surge of excitement! You see, this was the very last graduate show to come out of the fashion school's famous Charing Cross building as Central Saint Martins is about to move to a brand new campus in Kings Cross. With everyone from the late Alexander McQueen to Stella McCartney and Christopher Kane having spent their student days at the Charing Cross builidng, this show was always going to be a momentous occasion.

It aptly began with a montage of snaps celebrating the past 70 years spent which left the audience feeling quite emotional – especially all the ex-students who were there to show their support! Everyone was however quickly brought back to the present as the runway lit up and the show began. And what a show it was! 45, seven-piece collections created specially selected to have their work featured made up this year's show. From models pushing baby prams and gorilla inspired coats to floor sweeping knitted cardigans and floral printed latex, as expected, it was exciting from start to finish.

In amongst all the wonderful and often avant-garde collections, we picked out a few firm favourites. We adored Annabel Luton's stunning bird printed velvet ensembles, as well as her flowing mountain print dress which was teamed with an quilted leather jacket of oversized proportions.

Eilish Macintosh also stood out with her beautifully structured coat made from woven car seatbelts, and her gold printed pyjama-style trousers styled with a shirt in a flash of vibrant blue had the front row scribbling away.

Holly Fowler's work also wowed with her stunning bell-shaped dresses in varying pastel shades and contrasting jewel inspired prints realy making a statement.

It was so great to see all the fresh new talent still coming out of Central Saint Martins and a fantastic last show for the Charing Cross building! As Lucie Sutton very aptly marked on to her collection… RIP Charing Cross…
