As soon as we came across Joni Sternbach’s portraits and seascapes taken on sandy coastlines here, there, and everywhere, we knew we had to share them. For this ongoing project, aptly named SurfLand, the photographer sets up shop on the beach with one aim – to capture and celebrate the beautiful surfer!
Her one-of-a kind tintypes -created using a large format camera and a wet-plate collodian process that dates back to 1850 – have a beautifully poetic feel that you don’t come across very often. A spontaneous and unpredictable way to capture a moment in time, the streaks and variations in colour are as important to the final image as the subject captured. This raw, strikingly real style makes you long to be there on the beach with Sternbach and her surfers.
