MEADHAM KIRCHHOFF: BEFORE THE SHOW

An explosion of glitter, colour, tinsel and neon spray made the backstage area at the Meadham Kirchhoff show look more like the Rio Carnival than a London Fashion Week show – which was fitting on the day of Mardi Gras. Models sat patiently as they were transformed into glittery avatars with yellow beehives or New Wave cartoons with fluoro orange quiffs. It was truly a spectacle to behold!

And the clothes were no different: a trail of sparkle on the carpet led us to the rails (which were being carefully guarded by pink and blue-haired assistants). Meadham Kirchoff are known for their anti-fashion approach to fashion and this rail of cartoonish exuberance reminded us why – these are clothes to wear when you want to stand out and be extraordinary.

Meanwhile front of house, the PRs were caught up in tangles of ribbon and cellophane as they decorated the show venue to look like a veritable tinsel town. The models rehearsed for the show by practicing their moves on the light-up dancefloor to a disco-tastic soundtrack of Mariah Carey and Abba. We've never seen so much fun being had backstage as the models danced around!

All the journalists, editors, buyers and Meadham Kirchoff fans made arrived early for lunch, and the cheese toasties, fennel and parmesan salad and oatmeal and cranberry cookies did not disappoint.

Hamish Bowles was dashing around the Topshop pop-up store with armfuls of NEWGEN t-shirts before the show, and we saw so many Meadham Kirchhoff groupies dressed in designs from their previous collections that it really felt like a big love-in! It was definitely the most colourul front row of the week!
