LISTEN UP: POLICA ON OUR PLAYLIST

There’s nothing better than stumbling upon a new band that just ticks all the boxes for what you want to listen to right now. Non stop. On repeat. When we went to see Zulu Winter a few weeks ago we checked out where they’re touring and found out that they’re supporting a band called Polica while in America. Wow, are we glad we looked them up!

Fresh from a brilliant reception at SXSW, Polica are a four piece indie-rock group from Minneapolis which is fronted by singer Channy Leaneagh, who uses her voice like an instrument in the dreamy, bass heavy tracks, employing a great deal of auto-tune (it’s a good thing, we promise!) to give the songs a hypnotic quality. Leaneagh sings with a haunting, almost sorrowful effect that could be seen to be down to the personal heartache of recently splitting from her husband, a fellow musician who played with her in her previous band, the folk-y Roma di Luna.

Far from folk, Polica cite musical influences as wide ranging as ‘90s R&B (think Aaliyah) to Radiohead – and their unique sound has already been trumpeted by everyone from Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon to Jay-Z. Mesmerising and dark but lively and driving at the same time, we’re turning our volumes all the way up for this and can’t wait for the album – Give You The Ghost – to come out so we can make this the soundtrack for spring!
