Once a month we check in with one of the stylish girls working at Topshop towers, finding out about their job, taste in fashion and getting some insider secrets! This month we met Lucy Russell, who told us all about her life as a Junior Buyer for Topshop.
My job title is… Junior Buyer and that means I develop, source and plan our ranges working with our merchandising, design teams and supplier base.
I studied… Sociology at the University of Sheffield
I got my job by… working as a Style Advisor for a year in Oxford Circus Topshop. I heard internally of a head office vacancy for a BAA role and I got in touch with the HR department.
In a typical working day I… Review new samples on main range Topshop departments, deciding which are best for the Tall and Petite ranges – we have regular fit sessions where we fit and adapt the garments specifically for Tall and Petite. We also have design and buyers meetings where we brainstorm trends and new ideas. I try to get out and about as much as possible, for some inspirational shopping, blog research and visiting our stores.
The best thing about my job is… Getting to see all of the sketches and ideas become reality. It’s one of the best feelings when a style you’ve been involved with is a bestseller!
When I was growing up I wanted to be… A travel writer.
I couldn’t do my job without… The amazingly creative teams I work with.
My advice to students hoping to crack the fashion industry would be… Aim high, always aspire to be the best with the best. The most successful people I know are happy and love what they do.
When I’m in London, my hottest hang-outs are… Bistrotheque is a fast favourite, and we always love Lucky Voice in Soho or Islington. I also love a coffee at Tina We Salute You in Dalston, especially in the London sunshine.
I can’t live without… Coffee and Marc Jacobs
My favourite magazine is… Lula
I love grabbing my lunch from… Leon, Itsu or Princi on Wardour Street if I’m feeling extravagant.
As a special treat, I love to… Get my nails done at WAH.
In five years I’d like to be… Still happy and loving my job at Topshop towers!
