GET READY FOR TORCHES

It’s no secret that torches (gold ones in particular) are having their moment – but the Torches we’re talking about just happen to be of the more musical persuasion… Queue the introduction of a new five-piece band from London.

On the cusp of hitting the music scene big time, Torches’ glowing musical future was further pushed in the right direction last week after they wowed the crowd at the launch show of their new single, ‘Sky Blue & Ivory’.  Held at the Sebright Arms in Bethnal Green, we were lucky enough to catch them live in action…

The atmosphere was electric; in fact there were so many people who wanted to see the show, the venue had to start turning people away due to reaching its full capacity – always a good sign!

Combining front man, Charlie Drinkwater’s crystal-clear baritone, Alex Sprogis’ jagged guitar riffs and Nic Smith’s rumbling organ with the hypnotic beats of percussionists, Stephanie Anderson and Ed Kelland; the band have managed to create a sound that is both emphatic and uniquely their own. Think electro indie, mixed with haunting tones of brooding melancholia – a signature nicknamed by their loyal fans as ‘gloom pop’. After showcasing the latest single, as well as its B-side, ‘Silent Film’ and the new, foot stomping ‘Ritual’ – it’s safe to say, we’ve been listening to Torches ever since…
