BACKSTAGE AT MICHAEL VAN DER HAM SS13

Michael van der Ham was back again to take on the Topshop Showspace for his sixth season. Behind the scenes, production, hair and make-up and press were working hard to ensure the show ran as smoothly as possible after the quick morning turn around. But with plenty of mini sandwiches and juices on set, the team were ploughing through hair and beauty in no time.

On first arrival, white pleather hairbands neatly pushing back the models hair caught our eyes as a key look for the coming season. Like a grown up Alice in Wonderland, stylist Luke Hersheson using L’Oreal saw Michael’s fairy tale-like collection and knew that it needed an element of school girl finish. So created a look like a cartoon Princess with girls’ locks’ blow dried sleek, straight and glossy with a gentle curl underneath  just like a cartoon Princess.

Nails were of the utmost importance with Global Ambassador for Butter London, Katie Hughes, on call to ensure they were nothing but perfect. Using a sheer peach shade – Butter London’s Tea With the Queen – in two slick coats, Hughes declared  it a, “classic and beautiful look with a glossy finish,” to work alongside the pastels in the collection.

Lauren Parsons at Premier was the steady hands behind the make up. “Charlotte Rampling in The Night Porter was the inspiration,” said Parsons, dressed in a hip khaki tee shirt and rushing around to ensure every look was spot on, “it’s a classically, beautiful look but we wanted to give it an off-kilter colour so used a sheer lilac wash on the eyes and a strong orange lip.” Star Chinese model Li Xiao Xing was enjoying the buzz backstage, chatting with her fellow models who were all swooning over her gorgeous Celine bag and posing for the camera. Xing was undoubtedly what Parsons was thinking of when she said, “the Michael van der Ham girl is intrinsically hot.”
