BACKSTAGE AT TOPSHOP UNIQUE SS13

The atmosphere backstage at the Topshop Unique show was electric. You could feel the adrenaline slowly building and while it wasn’t completely calm like earlier this morning, it was certainly controlled with everyone in full anticipation of seeing months and months of hard work come to life on the catwalk.

The press had started to descend, our live cameras were rolling and models were beginning to arrive ready to be preened and primed to runway perfection, taking their chance to sneak over to catering for a smoked-salmon bagel and (amazing) chocolate brownies in between, all while working the paper-towelled hair look to keep frizz at bay!

We love that hair guru Anthony Turner let the models tresses dry naturally for the show – a nod to the beachy, easy look that is testament to the SS13 collection. If the clothes are polished, the Unique girl is set to contrast that with her natural beauty, i.e. working the just-stepped-out-of-bed look – nonchalant and always ready to just throw on a coat and hit the street to start another stylish day.

Make-up artist, Hannah Murray was busy at work looking every inch the casual, consummate professional in a pair of laid-back cropped jeans, Mary-Jane heels and a navy sweater. We stopped for a few moments to watch her technique as she stood above a gorgeous model, using lipstick as a blush to get that real rosy glow – yes, you can always expect the unexpected with our Unique team!

The beauty look? Effortless, pretty punk with a sheer palette that whispered touches of pink – think girly with an edge, a.k.a 90s cool. It was all a little lived-in and very Kate Moss and if you love this make-up look, the best news is you can shop it now! What the team wanted for the Unique SS13 girl was a nice and easy beauty regime, perfect for every girl, whoever and wherever she might be and so our nail artist Anatole Rainey went for neutral tips with our Nice ‘n’ Neutral varnish for a polished yet totally easy look for SS13.

Our Head of Design, Emma Farrow and Creative Director, Kate Phelan were there to oversee everything, looking completely at ease, full of smiles and excitement while stylist, Clare Richardson had reign on the rails. Each was brimming with individual looks from the collection, divided by model boards stating which girl would be wearing what in the show and with a cute little hand-written note on the back that marked the name of their dresser – we love attention to detail!

Steamers were steaming, while sewing machines whirred for any last minute changes and even the occasional needle and thread was seen in the mix. Safe to say, the team were ready and raring to go when the call for show time finally came…
