PATRICIA NICOLAS TALKS FREEDOM FOR TOPSHOP

Posted on October 5, 2012

We think we’ve just discovered our latest girl crush. Not only does Spanish-born jewellery designer, Patricia Nicolas make amazing creations, keep her own blog and regularly contribute to Vogue Spain – she’s now gone and given us a serious case of wardrobe envy because when it comes to effortless style, this is a woman who’s got it down to a very fashionable tee. And if all that wasn’t enough, she’s about to set your wishlist through the roof too because Miss Nicholas has just collaborated on an incredible line of pieces for our very own, Freedom for Topshop. Here she talks all about the collection, her personal inspirations and just where exactly that amazing fashion sense comes from…

How does it feel to be collaborating with Freedom at Topshop?

I’m honoured! For me, Topshop is arguably Britain’s most influential high street fashion brand – it’s so inspirational, you can step into any store and immediately find yourself immersed in the creative environment. It really recognises the potential for collaborating with other designers to create cutting edge collections that are available to purchase.

What was the inspiration for the collection?

My influences derive from Spanish culture, especially when considering my Frida Khalo collection. For The Art of Kissing collection, I was inspired by romance and seduction alongside rebellion, the peculiar and the mystical, which is all reflected within the combination of gothic shades, luxurious golds, silvers and skeleton hands and fingers that feature within the collection.

How did you get into jewellery design?
My family has been working with jewellery since 1960. My father is a well-known jewellery designer from Spain and my mother is a fashion designer so I guess creativity and design runs in my veins – my grandmother was a painter, which has probably made an effect on me too!

What’s your favourite aspect of your work?

I enjoy the making of the pieces and the development of the ideas, it’s so satisfying to take an idea and see it come to light.

Can you describe your personal style?

I really admire British style – it’s all about taking risks; ignoring conservatism and embracing expression. For me, I’ll often wear simple clothing but finish my look with a statement piece, like a hat or bright, colourful jewellery, a big coat or leopard print boots. I’m always mixing vintage with current design, which is the principle of my style!

Do you have any style icons?

I love Frida Kahlo; my new campaign is all about her. She’s a constant source of inspiration and I can really imagine her wearing my jewellery designs. I also love Jane Birkin for her natural beauty.

Who are your favourite designers?

For shoes, it’s always Prada or Miu Miu and I love Burberry for clothes – they really know how to combine classic British style with modern elements. I was lucky enough to attend the Burberry show during London Fashion week and was astounded by the collection and its use of metallic shades of deep reds, purples and blues. I think we’ll be seeing lots of metallics in the season to come!

Where are your favourite London haunts?

I actually wrote a guide to London recently for Vogue Spain, highlighting all the great areas of this interesting city. For me, Shoreditch is a real treasure trove of vintage shops, quirky galleries and little restaurants, it’s developing quickly and is such a special place – a creative hub where there is never a boring day! I like the area so much that I chose to open up my store here at 97-99 Sclater Street, which is close to Brick Lane – somewhere art and fashion can be expressed in all forms!

And finally, if you weren’t a jewellery designer what do you think you’d be doing?

I would be an artist or a couture fashion designer – I would have to be doing something that involved making things!
