CHARITABLE WRIST CANDY WITH SHELTERBOX

Posted on November 6, 2012

At Topshop we love giving back. From Fashion Targets Breast Cancer to Age UK, we’ve teamed up with all sorts of non-profit organisations to help those in need. Whether it’s a touring mobile soup kitchen or hosting a summer picnic, us Topshop girls love a little philanthropy and this year is no exception!

We’ve teamed up with disaster relief organisation, ShelterBox as our charity of choice and designed four adorable charm bracelets to be sold instore and online with £1 of every £2 going directly to those in need around the world.

Studded with various disc charms brandishing stars, hearts and statement phrases and slogans; buying the rope bracelets won’t just make you feel good but make you look good too. We’ve been wearing ours with stacked wrists full of beads and watches galore but the nifty accessories can also be transformed into necklaces and cute bag charms. (And with the up and coming holidays in mind – make great stocking fillers and gifts!)

Since we first wrote the rest of this blog post in early November, ShelterBox have been working hard across the world. Most of the money we’re raising will be going to ensure ShelterBox is ready for the next disaster. ShelterBox are currently deployed in The Phllippines – responding to the damage cause by Tropical Storm Bhopa – Nigera – responding to the flooding and in response to the Syrian crisis – working with local aid agencies in Turkey and northern Iraq to provide families who have fled Syria. Just this year ShelterBox responded to over 25 disasters across the world. A good cause if we ever did hear of one. Snap them up while you can, here.

As for ShelterBox they do exactly what they say on the tin. Providing emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies for families and communities around the world who are affected by disaster. Most recently, they’ve been deployed in Niger and Senegal after serious flooding and have also been providing shelter for Syrian refugees in Iraq. Just yesterday ShelterBox announced they were en route to Cuba following the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy. In short, whenever a disaster hits, ShelterBox is prepared to help.

We chatted with ShelterBox press officer Laura Dale about the organisation , the work it does and the charity’s aspirational future.

What does one “ShelterBox” contain?

We deliver the essentials a family needs to survive in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. Each large, green ShelterBox is tailored to a disaster but typically contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, water storage and filtration equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items.

Where’s the latest place you’ve been supplying ShelterBoxes?

At the moment we are operating in Nigeria, Senegal and Niger where there has been flooding. We also have a team in northern Iraq responding to the Syrian refugee crisis. The operations team are constantly monitoring disasters around the globe. They will consult with existing contacts and organisations on the ground before deciding whether to put a ShelterBox response team member into the country to asses the need for emergency aid relief. Once the team arrives in country they will liaise with organisations and individuals on the ground and HQ to decide what the need is and if we can help.

How do you feel about the Topshop collaboration?

We are thrilled that Topshop has chosen to support ShelterBox and we’re looking forward to the launch of the friendship bracelets. Hopefully, it will help to spread the word about ShelterBox and our work to a young audience.

What are your aims in 2013?

Our goal is to help 50,000 families who lose everything in a disaster every year.
