GO GALACTIC

Posted on November 13, 2012

Mirror, mirror on the wall which galactic icon is the most inspirational of them all? From accessories with superpowers to an anti-gravity striptease – we’re giving you a run down of our favourite galactic fashion icons and why we think they’re out of this world. If you hadn’t noticed already, we’re taking style to infinity and beyond with our Galactic collection that’s just landed on Topshop.com!

CARRIE FISHER AS PRINCESS LEIA
Fearless and fashionable, Star Wars character Princess Leia played by Carrie Fisher is probably one of the most popular galactic female icons out there. Whether she’s saving the universe or the man she loves, she’s always willing to risk her life for the struggle and never expects anything in return! Not just known for bringing peace to a troubled galaxy but for wearing her hair in plaits and looking space-tastic at all times, Princess Leia is definitely a fashion force to be reckoned with.

LYNDA CARTER AS WONDER WOMAN
Her name is whispered in awe across the galaxy and no superhero list would be complete without her! A 70s cult hit, “The New Adventures of Wonder Woman” propelled Diana Price to stardom with her superhuman strength and the ability to fly at light-speed. Her wardrobe helped too of course! Take note of The Lasso of Truth, a pair of indestructible bracelets and her tiara that doubles up as a projectile, making her one of the kitschest and most stylish superheroes out there. It’s no wonder when anyone throws a superhero-party every girl wants to dress up as her in a bralet and high-waist hotpants!

SIGOURNEY WEAVER AS ELLEN RIPLEY
Before Ellen Ripley, a.k.a Sigourney Weaver came along, the idea of a woman who fought her own battles always involved perfectly feathered hair or a bikini! Warrant Officer Ripley changed that when she took out a giant alien using her strength and yes shock horror, her brains! Initially a nervous wreck with a life in pieces, Ripley is re-born as a warrior when her maternal instinct kicks in and stirs her to go through cosmic hell to save her surrogate daughter. It’s a dream role for Weaver who handles both Ripley’s softer side and kick-ass attitude with a good dose of cool. Hats off for the first action heroine without latex pants!

DAVID BOWIE’S SPACE ODDITY
What does David Bowie have to do with space you ask? Well he was the first artist who  directed fashion and music in a galactic direction with “Space Oddity” which was released in 1969 and played on radios all over the world when man first landed on the moon. During his glam rock era in 1972, Bowie re-emerged as the androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust led by his hit single “Starman” from his album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust. In the late 70s, he had his first major film role with The Man who fell to Earth and now 40 years later Bowie’s son Duncan Jones has released his own space oddity – a debut feature called “Moon”. Spacey father and spacey son!

JANE FONDA AS BARBARELLA
If you haven’t seen Jane Fonda in the camp cult film classic Barbarella – Queen Of The Galaxy then you’re missing out. Playing in the far far future, Barbarella, a 41st century astronaut, lands on the planet Lythion and sets out to find and destroy the evil Durand Durand after doing an in-flight anti-gravity striptease of course! The special effects are particularly impressive as are the various ways that Fonda tears off what few clothes she possesses! Ok, it’s practically a sexploitation flick but the costumes are fabulous and you will definitely win points with any sci-fi nerd whose favor you happen to be seeking.
