This month we caught up with Megan Humphreys, our Creative Deputy Manager at London Oxford Circus flagship store to bring you another exciting glimpse into the world of Topshop HQ. Read on to find out her tips for students breaking into fashion and just how important a cup of tea is…
My job title is… Creative Deputy Manager for London Oxford Circus Topshop.
And that means… Assisting the Creative Manager in looking after the visual aesthetic of the store; This involves designing and maintaining the creative proposition of all windows, mannequin styling, creative marketing projects and in store interiors.
I studied… Fashion Design.
I got my job by…working hard and making/ retaining good connections with people in the industry. Oh, and keeping myself inspired.
In a typical working day I… I get up at 5.30am and make my way to the office. Once at work I grab a cup of tea and start picking up on emails in preparation for the day and week ahead. At around 7 we set up the team and floor walk, to insure everything looks great before opening to the public. At midday I begin work on this season’s creative projects. Where my afternoons are often spent liaising and visiting suppliers to insure all next seasons’ creative installations and mannequin renovations look fantastic!
The best thing about my job is… The creative and inspiring people I work with and being SO busy, I’m never bored.
When I was growing up I wanted to be… When I was much younger I wanted to be a forensic scientist! But then I soon realised that a creative role would be better for me.
I couldn’t do my job without… lots of cups of tea and my team!
My advice to students hoping to crack the fashion industry would be… Work hard, don’t give up, be positive and make the most of opportunities that come your way.
And my hero piece for this season is… The Unique toe capped boots
When I’m in London, my hottest hang-outs are… Shane’s on Chatsworth for food and ‘Friday late’ at the Victoria and Albert museum, where they have live performances, debates, DJs and late night exhibition openings.
And when I’m in my hometown I love hanging out at… I love going to Stroud Valleys Art Space, a studio, venue and project space for community art. I also love Stroud farmers as I can meet with friends and eat delicious food!
I can’t live without… Cheese any kind… Le Pain Quotidian do an amazing lunchtime cheese board.
I love grabbing my lunch from… Reynolds on Great Portland Street.
On my iPod right now is… Emmy The Great, saw her in Glastonbury 2011 and have loved her ever since.
As a special treat, I love to… Go away somewhere warm with my friends. This year we drove round the coast of Italy, which was lovely.
In five years I’d like to be… Head of Creative for… TOPSHOP!
