As per usual the backstage area at the Topshop Showspace before the Unique SS14 show was filled to the brim with photographers, make-up artists, enthusiastic press and hair stylists. Tip-toeing lightly around the crowds we managed to get up close and personal with some of our favourite talents within the fashion industry and get the skinny on the whole new world of Topshop Unique.
Hannah Murray, the fabulous Topshop make-up consultant and star of the Art and Commerce make-up roster, looked to Ibiza for a sun-soaked look. “It’s undone and lived-in,” said Hannah as she lined model Rosie Tapner’s eyes with kohl, “it’s effortlessly cool Ibiza beach beauty.” Hannah worked closely with Head of Design Emma Farrow and Creative Director Kate Phelan to immerse the collection’s equally summer-loving collection into the beauty look.
HIGH SHINE EYES
As last season was all about the cornflower blue lids, the attention is once again back on the eyes. “The eyes take centre stage this summer at Topshop Beauty. Tough, heavy, destroyed kohl lines the lower eye,” said Hannah, “gloss is layered on the lid over a soft metallic brown eye shadow for a high shine finish.” Such dramatic peepers were inspired by the scattered mirrored embellishment seen in the looks with metallic silver liner applied in the corner of the eye to glimmer in the sunlight. Another important element of the look was the skin, which true to its Ibiza-location, stayed bronzed and tan. “Skin is effortlessly bronzed and matte in texture with a golden metallic, dusty rose blush swept over the cheeks.”
So imagine you’ve been at the beach all day long, you go straight to the club and have such a good night you fall asleep on the beach! So is the idea behind the tousled, mussed up hair that came down the runway. Hair stylist and Topshop favourite Anthony Turner was back using L’Oreal Professionnel to perfect the beach-babe tresses.
So important was the association with a sunny holiday that St Tropez tanning was called in to give the girls are bit of summer-loving. Fake-tanner-extraordinaire Nichola Joss set up a tanning tent in which our girls got starkers and sprayed to give them a real holiday glow.
FOCUS ON THE FOOD
To keep all our lovely models full of energy whilst running inbetween shows (as well as keeping our fabulous staff in tip-top condition!) we had to ensure that the food area was to the highest of standards. From healthy salads packed with green salad and pomegranate to humous and pepper sandwiches there was plenty to snack on between tones of fruit, chocolate chip, muffins and most importantly red velvet cupcakes.
We’re known for the emerging faces we put out on the catwalk and this season was no difference. With the new supers Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn storming the show on either end, it was Sam Rollinson and Drake Burnette taking the title of new faces.
