Walking around the backstreets of Berlin-Mitte always turns into an unexpected treasure hunt of cool coffee places, eye-popping galleries and bustling book stores. We recently enjoyed the ultimate Saturday when we popped over to the German capital for a splash of culture, gastronomy delights and unexpected discoveries. We started with a pleasurable pastrami experience at the Mogg & Melzer (a Jewish deli located in an old girls’ school) before walking our full and happy bellies up “Auguststraße” where we spotted a promising shop window sign saying: “Do you read me??”. The shop was a literary gem filled with fashion, photography and art magazines as well as books and readings from all over the world. We were hard pushed to pick a favourite, but ultimately we were seduced by Angelika Taschen’s “Der Berliner Stil”, a book dedicated to – what else – Berlin style.
The handy coral-red pocketbook is another genius piece by Angelika Taschen, a notable design and lifestyle expert who has published more than 150 books on a range of creative subjects. Her passion for Berlin was clear in the beautifully designed handbook dedicated to the city’s fashion habits, shopping secrets, places to visit and sartorial advice. The book also took on the duty to disprove the cliché that Berlin is a vintage filled, canvas tote fielding populace. Instead taking a closer look at the lifestyle of the Berlin woman and this city’s unique style sets.
