For any fashion related questions, queries or even some inspiration, us Topshop girls don’t head to Google but rather open up our well-thumbed copy of Phaidon’s The Fashion Book. Vogue declare it the fashion bible and Elle call it the definitive resource, what’s clear is the coffee-table tome is undeniably the most authoritative tome on fashion and beyond.
After 15 years, the book is finally getting an update to bring it soaring into the noughties. 72 new entries are gracing the pages including the prestigious Nicholas Ghesquerie and ex-NEWGEN recipients Mary Katrantzou and Christopher Kane. This refresh isn’t just about designers and some of the most exciting entries feature sartorial icons and a who’s who within the art and business of fashion. Street style photographer Bill Cunningham and alternative fashion champion and actress, Tilda Swinton appear, as do the most established fashion colleges and photographers.
To celebrate the new release we’re throwing two Topshop Talks dedicated to our favourite topic and our favourite tome. On either sides of the Atlantic – at our London Oxford Circus flagship and at our New York store – we’re hosting fashion talks that are open to all. Our New York panel on Thursday, October 10, at 6 p.m. will feature the legendary Iris Apfel, celebrated designer Vera Wang, and Style.com’s Dirk Standen will be on hand to talk fashion history and the new guard of style alongside moderator Simon Collins, dean of fashion at Parsons the New School for Design. As for the London counterpart SHOWstudio’s dashing Lou Stoppard will be hosting a talk with milliner to the stars Stephen Jones and Central St. Martin’s BA fashion lecturer. If that wasn’t enough, pick up the new book instore and get a limited edition tote bag and a signed print by cover illustrator Mats Gustafson four days before anyone else will be able to get their paws on it!
