Indie quintet The Naked And Famous first hit our radar back in 2010, scoring overnight fame with their infectious debut, ‘Young Blood’. Led by the dreamy vocals of mega-babe Alisa Xayalith, the New Zealand gang have been regulars on the Topshop playlist ever since. So after two years of touring and recording, we’re happy to hear the band are back with some new material. This week saw the release of ‘I Kill Giants’, a track that offers the same anthemic choruses and layered synths we’ve grown to love from this lot.
We caught up with the band’s leading lady in between touring, to chat Topshop, tea and girl power:
How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it?
People often tell me that our music is hard to categorise. I would like to think we come under the umbrella of alternative rock that contains an even balance of masculinity and femininity.
What artists do you admire today?
I really admire female artists with skills in not only songwriting and instrumentation but production as well. Being in the studio is such a male dominated environment and there are females like Grimes and Brooke Fraser who are incredibly talented. These women are truly inspiring.
Who would you love to collaborate with?
I would love to collaborate with Bjork or Karin Dreijer Andersson from The Knife. What a dream that would be!
What’s the main inspiration behind your music?
I never think about creative inspiration coming from a singular entity, though I can say that everything does come from a personal place, it has to. Inspiration can come when I’m carrying out a mundane task or perhaps in my dreams.
Do you have any pre-gig rituals?
After I’ve decided what to wear and finished my make-up, I sit in a corner away from everyone with my headphones on doing vocal warm ups. I make myself chamomile tea and drink that before show time to relax my nerves.
How would you describe your style?
Clothing has to feel like a second skin and what I decide to wear onstage has to make me feel like an empowered woman. At the moment I love wearing long black dresses, heeled boots, playsuits and there’s an awesome long black silk jacket I recently purchased from Topshop that creates a great silhouette on stage.
Where do you love to shop?
I love shopping in Topshop. There wasn’t one in New Zealand until a few years ago, but even then, it’s nothing compared to the stores in London and New York. Most of my shopping is done online. A lot of girls look to shopping online nowadays especially if they are as busy as I am!
What piece of clothing are you currently obsessed with?
I am obsessed with my pair of gold Oxford shoes. I wear them with almost everything.
What can we expect from the tour?
We’ve just released our new album ‘In Rolling Waves.’ So we’ll be playing plenty of material from that which I’m so excited about. See you there?
