JOIN THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION

For a blast from the past in the form of early computers to an insight into the future in augmented reality the Barbican Centre’s Digital Revolution exhibition is rich, exciting and inspiring. Spanning our obsession with tech since the ’70s the show follows the medium’s influence on everything from art, film, design and music. 3D printers, creative coding and wearable technology – Digital Revolution has it all. We got a sneak preview before tomorrow’s launch day and have picked out some of our favourite awesome and imaginative moments. Read on below and start booking your tickets now!

REMINISCE ABOUT OLD-SCHOOL TECH

Ever played The Sims or Laura Croft? The opening part of the exhibition will capture the heart of all you ’80s and ’90s kids. From vintage playstation games to the very first prototype of the world wide web – the first room of Digital Revolution is dedicated to your favourite tech highlights of moments past. There’s even a Pac Man to play on!

EXPLORE THE SECRETS BEHIND GRAVITY

Ever wondered how they did those totally believable space scenes in Gravity? Be prepared to be shocked. Go behind the scenes on set to see how Sandra got into character with a little help from Framestore’s mind-blowing visual effects and immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring tech that made Inception break VFX ground.

PLAYING WITH LASERS

Digital artists (and generally super smart folks) Umbrellium – that’s Usman Hasque and Nitpak Samen – have created an interactive exhibition that is one of the most exciting we’ve ever seen. That’s right EVER seen. Head down to the darkest depths of the Barbican’s Pit space and be confronted by lasers beamed down onto a plain black floor. These aren’t your standard lasers and instead the light beams react as you touch them – just reach out your hands and move the light around the floor like a physical being. It’s pretty difficult to encapsulate in words so we suggested you head down there and check it out for yourself!

DIGI AND DEV ART GO HEAD-TO-HEAD

Say goodbye to paintbrushes and pencil, there’s a new wave of art that’s all about tech. New creatives are looking to technology as a art form in itself. Whether it’s the brightly coloured eBoy graphics that make us think of tetris or the coders turning random numbers into interactive exhibitions. Namely, the Wishing Wall which features animated butterflies into which you can whisper your wish of choice and see it appear before your eyes. WOW.

Also, in need of a the ultimate geeky gadget or DIY techno kit? The Digital Revolution shop is also pretty amazing. What are you waiting for? Snap up your tickets and start sharing your loves with the hashtag #DigitalRevolution.
