Meet photographer/stylist duo Masha Mel and Tess Yopp. Known for their edgier-than-edgy shoots in magazines like Dazed, i-D and Hunger, this Russian double act are gaining serious cred with those in the know. We caught up with the girls for a quick chat (wearing matching Marques’Almeida coats) at London Fashion Week.
What brings you to Fashion Week?
Tess: We normally work as a photographer and stylist, but this season we thought we’d give set design a go.
Masha: We built the set for Ryan Lo’s presentation. His SS15 collection is inspired by mermaids under the sea so we went for a Hawaiian party set-up! Think palm leaves, pink ukuleles, inflatable flamingos – it was a lot of fun to create.
What makes you two a good double act?
T: We have a very similar sense for style. And we’re both Russian!
M: Working with Tess is a lot of unpredictable fun! Her styling really compliments my photography – she’s got a real eye for colour and finding the most eye-catching pieces.
What’s been your favourite project to work on?
M: We recently did an accessories shoot for Hunger which looked great – we shot each other as the models.
T: I love this season’s Marques’Almeida campaign we shot. I can’t tell you too much until it comes out, but it follows three girls wandering through a forest…
You’re obviously big Marques’Almeida fans?
M: We met Marta and Paulo when they were studying at Central Saint Martins and used some of their pieces for an editorial – we’ve been working closely with them ever since.
T: Their designs are so cool and youthful. They can be dressy but look completely effortless at the same time.
Did you plan to wear the same Marques’Almeida coat today?
T: No! We always end up wearing the same thing – it just happened!
Masha what do you love about your Topshop furry clutch?
M: The colour, the price and that it’s big enough to put your camera in it.
Any advice for getting into the fashion industry?
T: Don’t be afraid to approach loads of people and intern lots and lots and lots…
M: Never stop!
Like Tess and Masha’s style? Look out for the Marques’Almeida x Topshop collection arriving on 9th October.
