PULL OFF A POLONECK

Polonecks are big news for AW. But how should we be wearing them? We enlisted the help of Vogue’s Julia Hobbs to share her top three rollneck styling tricks:

1. THE SUITABLE STYLE TRICK

Tap into the simpler side of the Seventies trend with a three-way autumnal colour clash – think black with chocolate brown, mulberry or tan. Rather than wearing your minimal suiting with a crisp white men’s fit shirt (a look that now feels self-consciously strict), switch instead to a clean black poloneck – the new attitude is about a softer, folksy feel with a dash of retro polish. Keep footwear simple – round-toe mod girl ankle booties rather than masculine stomper boots tick the ‘work-appropriate’ box.

2. THE EVENING TRICK

A dressed-down disco look defined the party season on the catwalks, but admitting a sparkly shift dress into your average day-to-day wardrobe is potentially easier said than done. Start by reversing your thinking on how you style your partywear – it’s what goes underneath rather than on top which counts most this season. Wearing a paint box bright poloneck below an evening dress lightens up over zealous sequins and perfects a sculpting bodycon look without revealing any flesh. Ideal for those Saturday afternoons when ducking home to dress up would just be too much effort.

3. THE TOMBOY TRICK

Military shirting typically signals laid-back tomboy style – this time around however the look is less literal. Keep the khaki colour palette (it flatters every skin tone) but lose the obviously masculine edge. For a fresh contrast, pick a sporty jersey polo and wear your shirt unbuttoned three notches for a feminine twist. Pair with high-waisted patent trousers to hit a rebel note or gently frayed flared jeans – just be sure to seek out a hardworking medium-width brown belt to add a considered, rather than punkish, edge.
