JUNGLE ANIMALS LIKE SHOPPING TOO

For her first Topshop capsule collection, Vanessa da Silva was inspired by "a jungle goes shopping theme." Looks like camels love lipstick and high heels too!

Here Vanessa discusses what inspired her range of tees, vests and capes - love that she included a special drawing of her precious London jungle!

'The theme for my Topshop line came from an eccentric jungle that goes shopping in London. I'm kind of obsessed by nature, but then living in a big city was my way to celebrate both in a drawing. The prints have a taste of my own tropicalia - high heels, precious stones and a lot of laugh. The shapes come from my own line which are loose and comfortable - natural cotton with a bit of shine.'

Illustrations by Kenneth Paul Block, Alvaro, Bil Donovan and Steven Broadway

After the 1960s when fashion photography started to dominate the pages of magazines such as Vogue, illustration was used to capture the looks of the day.

For decades, a sure, knowing line, and a whoosh of colour defined a look, an attitude, and even an era. And then, from around 1963, photography began to take off and the reign of fashion illustration was over.

With the 'The Line of Fashion', (April 1 to May 2), the Society of Illustrators in association with The Leslie-Lohman Gay Art Foundation hope to pay tribute to illustrators Kenneth Paul Block, René Bouché, Antonio, Eric, Joe Eula, JC Leyendecker, Mel Odom, George Stavrinos, Michael Vollbracht and many other great fashion artists who wait patiently for the world's great museums to open their doors and welcome them.
