SNAP HAPPY

Get set to have your pulse rate quicken because fashion’s finest founding photographers have landed in one must-see exhibition!

Believe it or not, there was a time when photography was considered a lesser fashion medium than the more prolific illustration that pre-1920s magazines put to use. Then one day Vogue hired Edward Steichen, who fit in with the magazine’s new modernist leanings. His Pictorial style helped to bridge the gap between drawings and the sort of style imagery that we’re familiar with today, and it’s at this point in history that Six Masters of Photography sets its scene.

Bringing together the collective genius of Steichen, Erwin Blumenfeld, Guy Bourdin, William Klein, Helmut Newton and Norman Parkinson, the exhibition documents the very earliest widespread use of camera images in fashion publishing and explores the ways in which photography today is still so heavily influenced by its forerunners.

Social context aside, this is an amazing opportunity to see some simply stunning pictures and get a huge heap of style inspiration. It’s on at the Diemar/Noble Photography Gallery until July 11th, so get your skates on and go have a look!

SOUND OF SUMMER

USE copy

Right now we're compiling our summer playlist, and the band we can’t stop listening to is Stockport's very own Delphic. Their album Acolyte is a gorgeous mix of arms-in-the-air dance music and softly sung, heart-wrenching lyricism - a perfect precursor to summer nights out or chilling out by the pool.

We've had our toes tapping all afternoon to the title track and have the album pretty much stuck on repeat! It was recorded in Berlin and the boys have had no trouble picking up on some of the city’s incredible energy - Acolyte positively pulses with can’t-stand-still danceability.

LAUGH A MINUTE

We were expecting a barrel of laughs on our way to the Tate Britain's new exhibition, and Rude Britannia didn't disappoint. While looking at British comic art from the 1600s to the present day - including satirical drawings by Hogarth, extracts from the Beano and a life-sized Spitting Image Margaret Thatcher - we gasped, blushed and giggled.

Everything goes off the silly scale in a room curated by Harry Hill where the absurd is embraced by a group of human-sized vegetables beating up an enemy gang of fast food. But being followers of fashion, our favourite room included cartoons poking fun at women with extravagant style. Obviously we thought they were trendsetters!
