THE FULL REPORT: DAVID KOMA

September 20, 2010

Since graduating from the renowned Fashion MA at Central Saint Martins, David Koma has become the go-to-designer for short, sculptural, show-stopping dresses! For SS11, David continued to experiment with his signature, creating a beautifully cohesive collection that wowed the front row with the level of skill on show for a relatively new designer.

David's first model stepped out onto the catwalk to the sound of Tchaikovsky's 'Swan Lake'. Inspired by his experiences of going to the Russian Ballet whilst growing up in Moscow, the designer played with the vision of a woman who is strong, yet fragile. Ballerina inspired dresses with peplum skirts and delicate sheer inserts were expertly constructed in fragile chiffons and organzas in romantic, powdery shades.

Creating a stronger statement,  python skin and embossed leather were added to sleek full- length gowns and strong shouldered dresses in vertical, linear panels. Raw python rouched belts also featured at the waists of David's 50s influenced dresses and body conscious silhouettes and are set to be a favourite with the starlets who love to wear David's clothes.

The designer's contrast of monochromatic black and white with powder yellow and pale pink was stunning and wowed in the delicate chiffons and organzas that were set against robust python skin, embossed leather and fine wool.

This was the collection that really moved the David Koma signature forwards since he made his debut. His dreses for SS11 saw a new level of skill from a designer who has been championed a star right from the start and we can't wait to see which stars will be wearing these come spring!

With amazing geometric knuckle dusters and architectural cuffs, as well shoes designed by Alain Quilinci, the show was styled to perfection. A big thumbs up from the team at Topshop - we loved it and can't wait to collaborate with you...

He is such an exciting designer - pity his dresses cost up to about 5 grand. Is there a Topshop collaboration on the cards then?

His work has a lot of similarities to previous Jonathan Saunders collections

I love this collection too. Great pics! The powdery, fondant colours make such a dramatic contrast to the shiny black and gold python. Would also love a collaboration! x
