PERFECT PIROUETTES

Posted on October 13, 2011

The exhibition, Degas and the Ballet - Picturing Movement recently opened at the Royal Academy and like most London girls, we’ve added it to the top of our ever-growing list of things we want to do.

Made up of a stunning selection of illustrations, paintings and sculptures by the famous French Impressionist artist, Edward Degas, the exhibition focuses on his fascination with the French ballet.

Degas_sized

Degas mixed within an extremely influential set of Parisians and had unparalleled connections. Allowed to slip backstage and draw the dancers whilst they rehearsed for their show, his ballerina series give us a sneak peek of what it must have been like to be a dancer in the Parisian theatres of the late 1800s.

Degas’ groundbreaking use of colour and the innovative techniques he used to capture moving-image through early film and photography confirm him to be one of the greatest impressionists of his time. We can’t wait to go along and fall in love with Degas and the ballet all over again…

Don't miss out and make sure you get down there before the exhibition closes on December 11th.

REMEMBERING CORINNE

Posted on August 31, 2011

If you’re like us and have always loved Corinne Day’s documentary-style photography, then you’ll be touched and equally thrilled to find out that The Gimpel Fils Gallery is paying tribute to her revolutionary work this month with an exhibition. To mark the one-year anniversary of Corinne's death, the gallery are displaying her photographs as they appeared in the now defunct magazine, The Face. Corinne's work first appeared in this 90s magazine which shunned the high-gloss shoulder-padded, lipstick fuelled aesthetic of the era. Most famous are her candid snaps of Kate Moss which will be on show alongside a lot of other raw, equally emotional shots that you may have never seen before. Get down to the gallery between September 1st and October 1st and join the style set in remembering why Corinne was such a groundbreaking, meomorable photographer and woman.

CURTAIN CALL

Posted on August 24, 2011

Get your skates on this week and head down to The Roundhouse in North London for the last few days of Ron Arad's Curtain Call. This 360 degree exhibition shows moving installations by the likes of Hussein Chalayan, Mat Collishaw and Ori Gersht, projected onto a cylinder made from 5,600 silicon rods. They're on a rotation of two hours and are sure to be a visual feast! We're just dying to go after watching this video about the ideas behind it.

The exhibition runs until Monday, is open late-night and has no fixed entry price - you simply pay what you can afford. See you there for a serious dose of culture!

THE FLOATING CINEMA

Posted on August 19, 2011

As it’s the weekend, we thought we’d share The Floating Cinema with you. Housed on an ex-British Waterways boat and run by Annie Myers and Hazel Saunders, this aquatic film house is working its way along London’s canals, from its Easterly starting point.

Tomorrow night they’re showing The Fantastic Mr Fox and have invited one of the film’s animators along to showcase some of the actual puppets used! They’re going to project Mr Fox onto the banks of the canal, and guests are invited to come along in their best vulpine fancy dress. Fine cinema, a pretty barge and like-minded people in fancy dress sounds like our idea of a perfect night out – picnic blankets at the ready, we’ll see you there!

STANDON CALLING

Posted on August 18, 2011

Last weekend we packed our backpacks full to the brim with all manner of weird and wonderful fancy dress, and headed off to Standon Calling. Set in the grounds of a 16th century manor house in Hertfordshire and with less than 3000 people attending, it’s a truly unique event that really deserves its ‘boutique’ title. A three-day party that started in 2001 as a birthday BBQ, the festival has maintained all its personal touches – there’s a secret woodland bar, an all-night club in a cowshed and even a swimming pool to cool off in! Add in plenty of amazing on-the-verge-of–breakthrough music acts and a crowd that’s the friendliest we’ve ever seen - it’s pretty much the ultimate English festival experience!

1

We loved the ‘Gods and Monsters’ theme and couldn’t get over some of the incredible fancy dress on display!

2

There were artists like Lamb and Hercules & Love Affair rocking the main stage, which was small enough that it felt like being at a private gig.

3

We met loads of stylish girls hanging out by the pool or checking out the array of incredible food stalls, and totally fell in love with Arancini risotto balls.

4

There were some amazing vintage and fancy dress stalls, so we stocked up on plenty of quirky accessories to bulk up our festival armoire. But easily our highlight of the weekend was this tiny canine Wonder Woman – you don’t get much cuter than that!
